the beauty of summer

Maltese cross aka Lychnis Chalcedonica. A beauty in any garden — the hummingbirds love them too.

candid, behind the scenes

with one comment

Taken at a herding competition near Beaverlodge, Alberta – Canada.

For some photos to be effective, we don’t necessarily need to see the subject’s face. This image really appeals to me both photographically and emotionally. The echo of the graphic on his shirt to his own felt hat really caught my attention. He also had a strong presence about him, but when he turned away, there was this photo waiting to be taken.

still life

This rusty rake was once a reliable and hard working companion on this farm. Notice how it still has a place of prominence.

During a demonstration on Farmer’s Day at the South Peace Centennial Museum just outside Beaverlodge, Alberta – Canada.

I love horses anyway, so photo shoots like this are pure pleasure. These horses were not only handsome but they were an accomplished team working with such fluidity for the handler. As they work the ground, the one horse must remain down in the furrow while the other must remain on top — tricky footwork. This all looks so easy yet many hours of training and work were necessary to bring this team to such an accomplished level. It was hot, dry, and dusty yet they just forged ahead.

special candid moments

without comments

A candid moment captured during an event held at the South Peace Centennial Museum just outside Beaverlodge, Alberta.

While doing a photo shoot at their Pioneer Days, the bandstand had a variety of musicians taking turns playing old time music. This gentleman was seated in front of the bandstand, listening to the music and watching his friends and neighbours dancing. He captured my attention partly because of his personal presence but also because of the emotions I could see through his eyes — there was such a strong notion of contentment on his face.
